Guardianship

Becoming a guardian is not an easy process, but the rewards are well worth it. At the office of Dret A. McHatton we help you through the entire guardianship process, from establishing a guardian, to termination a guardianship, and everything inbetween, including establishing and enforcing visitation/contact orders. We are dedicated to giving you the best legal services possible for this service.

Know Your Rights as a Guardian

As a guardian, the parents still have parental right. They can have reasonable contact with the child. The court can end guardianship if the parents become able to take care of the child, and the guardianship is no longer neccessary. Guardians can be supervised by the court. Legal guardianship is a court-ordered relationship where an adult is appointed to care for a minor whose circumstances require it. The legal guardian must make decisions about the child's education, health, care, and support.

Considering Guardianship

If you are considering becoming a legal guardian for a child, make sure you've got the right attorney to consult throughout the process. This is determined by the probate court. During the period of determination, the court will evaluate you if you are a suitable care giver for the child or children. The guardian must always act in the best interest of the children and make a report at least annually. We have thoroughly researched all parts of the process to get you the best possible results for your guardianship.
